Hope riding high for Kyneton man and Paralympic hopeful Cycling

Alan Sandford is going on a 2700km bike ride to help Paralympic hopeful Morgan Webb Liddle.

Alan Sandford is going on a 2700km bike ride to help Paralympic hopeful Morgan Webb Liddle.

IN 1956 Alan “Sandy” Sandford missed out on selection in the Australian track cycling team for the Melbourne Olympics. Now 75, the Kyneton man, a multiple winner of Australian Masters events, is intent on helping another athlete realise her Olympic dreams.

Next month Mr Sandford will embark on a three-week, 2700km fundraising bike ride around Victoria to help Kyneton Paralympic hopeful Morgan Webb Liddle.

Mr Sandford hopes to raise $90,000 to buy Ms Webb Liddle an Olympic-standard dressage horse. He was first inspired by her determination at the Macedon Ranges Cycling Club where she rode in a specially adapted three-wheel bike.

Ms Webb Liddle, 20, is one of just 700 people worldwide who has the metabolic disorder relating to glycosylation, which affects her balance, co-ordination and speech.

She won the Para Equestrian (1A class) at last July’s national championships in Sydney but has yet to reach the qualifying score for Paralympic selection, missing out by 1.1 per cent at a competition in Werribee last November.

But she is hoping to reach the qualifying score at a competition in the US next month.

Her 18-year-old horse Sienna Tailor Made is too old to travel, so she will be riding a borrowed horse for the US event. But with London and other international competitions beckoning, Ms Webb Liddle needs another international dressage-standard horse.

The plucky rider is trained in Macedon by Danish international dressage rider Charlotte Pedersen with the sessions putting her dream within reach.

“The Paralympics isn’t just about sport, it is also about changing attitudes and presenting an image of disability that many in the community don’t see,” Ms Webb Liddle said. “It is a picture of people who have disabilities being strong, skilled and competitive and serious elite athletes.

” Mr Sandford will leave from Kyneton on Monday, March 5.

Friday 21 Oct Charlotte, Julie and Quirky went to Boneo Park, for a tune up, with Lone Joergensen, before The Nationals.

Quirky went really well, and it was a great lesson. Unfortunately Quirky got a cough the next,so we got the vet. He did a bloodtest and it showed that Quirky had a virus.

So that is the end of The National for us, very disappointing for all of us.

Now we have to get Quirky to recover, and then its on to The Dressage Festival.

The hill cottage team went to Boneo on the weekend.

Saxon had a good weekend (4th in both novice tests and 4th in one elementary)

Quirky did a good grand prix test showing great improvement and that all Charlottes hard work is starting to ...pay off. (but didnt get the scores that anyone expected ) Adele took Tammy for an outting and Setsuko had her first attempt at Inter 1 on Ralphy and showed promise.

We now look foreward to next weekend with some more hill cottage riders competing.

Back fro Denmark

Charlotte has just returned from a trip to Denmark, to see her family.Which she really enjoyed, especially, the long evening, where you can sit outside, and it's still daylight at 11 pm!!
She also managed to get a bit of horsey stuff in.Went to PSI in Hagen,to look at horses for a client. There she also caught up, with good friend, and owner of Come To Me, Susannah Clarke.

Looked at some stunning horses, and they were all beautifully presented, and lovely to ride.Ulf Müller, from PSI,and known from DWTS,made both Susannah and Charlotte very welcome.
It's a very nice and easy place,to look for horses,as they have horses for any budget.

Charlotte is now getting back into work, with Come To Me, which they both enjoy, and she is getting Dunkerque into shape, as they are planning there 1st Grand Prix start.

Hope he looses some weight before
that !!!
